Abstract
Welfare politics and populism have grown to be important aspects of modern Indian democracy. As tools of governance and electoral mobilization, political parties are increasingly using welfare programs, direct transfers, subsidies, employment initiatives, food security measures, housing, healthcare, and social protection. Welfare politics in India is intricately related to issues of caste, class, gender, religion, regional identity, and citizenship; it cannot be reduced to the distribution of economic advantages. Welfare programs offer a concrete way to create this political bond, and populist politics frequently portrays political leaders as the advocates of common or marginalized people against wealthy elites. Simultaneously, welfare measures have strengthened the political participation of marginalized groups and improved access to basic resources, both of which have contributed to social justice. However, detractors contend that the line between public policy and political patronage may become more hazy due to the growing personalization of welfare delivery and the exploitation of government programs for electoral goals. The relationship between populism, welfare politics, electoral mobilization, and social justice in modern India is examined in this piece of literature. It contends that while welfare politics has grown to be a significant tool for establishing democratic legitimacy, institutional accountability, universal access, and sustainable economic growth are necessary for its long-term contribution to social justice.
